Macronutrient
Definition: One of the three nutrients the body needs in large amounts for energy: carbohydrate, protein, and fat.
Why it matters
Diets are often described by their macronutrient ratio — the approximate share of daily calories coming from each. A ketogenic diet and a low-fat diet differ mainly in this ratio, not in whether they contain “good” or “bad” foods.
Example
A diet described as “70% fat, 20% protein, 10% carbohydrate” is describing its macronutrient ratio, not a specific food list.
